Woke up late one morning got up out of bed
brushed my shoes drank my booze
drowned the stop signs in my head
took a long walk out the window and I saw all the seas they were red
I said I ain’t goin fishin, I’ll eat from the tree of life instead

Walked down the road bout a quarter mile
saw a servant standing still
he said he saw a secret place
over yonder up the hill
so I tore up through the trees until my knees were cut and blood began to spill
but I never found nothin
just an empty hill

Been searchin up and down this road
for somthin that is mine
haven’t figured out the way it works
someday soon will be the time
I’ve been runnin towards the promised land
past crooks and thieves and sailors singing rhymes
and when I finally get there
I’ll just turn my head and smile
